Our History

Probably the only one in the world, Vidya Deep College stands tall with its specific features. This is the only Institute that caters to the inherent and definite need of the Religious Brothers of various congregations. Immediately after the Vatican Council II, with a view to keep pace with the Council directives, Brothers in India began to pre- meditate of establishing an institute for the theological formation of the Brothers in the year 1965. This genuine effort of Brothers came into its existence on 19th July 1967. In 1989 “Vidya Deep College” CRI Brothers’ Institute of Theology was affiliated to Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bangalore.

Initially the institute offered a two-year diploma Program in theology and allied subjects. The offered course was recognized by the Holy See and was signed by the Apostolic Inter Nuncio. This program continued for around 15 years, and in due course of time various religious congregations of the Brothers began to read the pulse of time and thus the fundamental questions had been asked, deeper realities have been discovered and a new identity of Brothers has been asserted. These reflections continued and lead to a deeper understanding of the gift of consecrated life in its aspects of call to holiness, communion and mission; in the year 1986, the CRI Brothers’ section took a historical division to conduct a three year Degree Course. For the same cause on 6th of Oct. 1986 the institute made request to Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, Rome, through the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio, and got approved for the same. Thereafter the offered course came to be known as Bachelors’ Degree in Religious Sciences.
